English

Here at Charnwood Primary School we use the KTC approach to teaching phonics, reading and writing.

Phonics

The children will be taught sounds, along with how to read and write words and sentences.

This term we aim to teach phonics twice a day and also include the skills they learn in all subject areas.

Reading

Reading will be a strong focus for year ones. We will be reading a class book daily to the children and we also read at other opportunities through out the day.

The children take part in small guided reading sessions one or two times per week.

The children have one shared reading whole group session daily to help improve their reading strategies.

Writing

Writing is taught in English and across other subject areas in year one. The children learn strategies in phonics in which they can apply in their writing.

The children are taught through guided writing sessions.

In year one the main focus for writing this term will be to write short sentences, remembering capital letters, fingers spaces and full stops.
