We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of our children. All staff have safeguarding training annually.

Our school ensures children learn in a safe, caring and enriching environment. Children are taught how to keep themselves safe, on and offline, to develop positive and healthy relationships and how to avoid situations where they might be at risk including by being exploited.

Our school has a statutory responsibility to share any concerns it might have about a child in need of protection with other agencies and in particular police, health and children’s services. Schools are not able to investigate concerns but have a legal duty to refer them. In most instances, the school will be able to inform the parents/carer of its need to make a referral. However, sometimes the school is advised by Children’s Social Care or police that the parent/carer cannot be informed whilst they investigate the matter. We understand the anxiety parents/carers understandably feel when they are not told about any concerns from the outset. The school follows legislation that aims to act in the best interests of the child.

Parents/Cares have access to the Child Protection Policy as part of initial induction process and will be available through our school’s website.
Parents and carers have the responsibility to inform the school if a child in their care is a young carer. Our establishment understands the stigma for some parents and carers in raising this, however, we are an inclusive school, and every effort will be made to support the child and family with this.

Reporting a safeguarding concern

All our staff are aware that children may not feel ready or know how to tell someone that they are being abused, exploited, or neglected, and/or they may not recognise their experiences as harmful. For example, children may feel embarrassed, humiliated, or being threatened. This could be due to their vulnerability, disability and/or sexual orientation or language barriers. This will not prevent our staff from having a professional curiosity and speaking to the DSL(s) if they have concerns about a child. Our staff will also determine how best to build trusted relationships with children and young people which facilitate communication.
