Children are taught the sounds letters make. They will also learn how write letter sounds in words and apply these in sentences.
This term we aim to teach phonics twice a day. Children will apply the reading and writing skills they have learnt across curriculum areas.
Shared and Guided Reading
To support the children with their reading skills we are now teaching Shared Reading on a daily basis in Year 1. The children are enjoying reading lots of different texts; talking about reading strategies, exploring the meaning of new vocabulary and answering questions about their reading.
Every child will read on a rota basis as a member of a small group to apply the skills they have learn in Shared Reading.
By the end of Year 1 it is the expectation that the majority of children will be able to read these words instantly. This will enable them to read with greater fluency and understanding.
Writing is taught in English as part of Shared and Guided Writing sessions and practised in many curriculum areas.
The main focus for writing this term is developing children's confidence to write short sentences which include a capital letter, fingers spaces and end with a full stop.
